Deacon Application

Here are some important things that you need to know.

Deacon Ministry at Calvary Chapel Newnan is an important service position in our church.  At Calvary Chapel, Deacons are “designated doers.”  The first picture of Deacons in scripture is found in Acts 6, where seven men were chosen to assist in practical service needs in the Jerusalem church.  These original designated doers gave themselves to tasks in the local church like tending to food distribution and serving tables, which allowed the Apostles and Bishops to remain focused on the tasks of leading the church, preparing and teaching God’s Word, and ministering to the congregation.

At Calvary Chapel Newnan, Deacons are a special group of servants whose sacrificial hearts make them available to do a variety of practical tasks.  For instance, Deacons may be called upon the help set up tables for banquets, conferences, and events, or to serve at those events in numerous capacities. This important service to our church meets real and practical needs, while preserving the right focus of our ministerial staff.   It isn’t healthy for our ministerial staff to take time away from the ministry of the Word and prayer to set up banquet tables or to serve spaghetti.

Deacons are people that can be counted on, are faithful, and are loyal to the Lord and to His church.  In 1 Timothy, the Apostle Paul described the necessary character of a Deacon.  A Deacon should be a respectable person, the kind of person who keeps their word and who keeps a commitment when they make one.  He or she should not abuse alcohol or other substances which could impair their service to Christ.  A Deacon is a person who isn’t greedy for money and whose faith is held sincerely and in confidence with a pure conscience.  A person who is gossipy or who puts others down isn’t yet ready to serve as a Deacon.  It is important for a Deacon’s words to be seasoned with salt.  A Deacon is self controlled and faithful in everything they do, including their marriage.  It is also important that a Deacon has their own house in order, managing the home and their children well.  We would encourage any interested applicant to review the Biblical qualifications for a Deacon in 1 Timothy 3:8-13.

At Calvary Chapel Newnan we invite both men and women to apply for this special and important service role.  There are no meetings to attend, and Deacons at our church are servants and not policy makers.  If you are interested in serving the Lord as a Deacon, and you feel that you meet the qualifications detailed above, we invite you to apply! After applications are received, our Pastor and Elders will prayerfully look over each application and fill the number of Deacon vacancies available as led of God.  Any remaining qualified candidates will become alternates in case a vacancy becomes available during the year.

Thank you for considering this important service ministry…the ministry of becoming a servant…a designated doer at Calvary Chapel Newnan.

Sincerely,
Pastor Joel and the Elders of CC Newnan
